Gisèle Vienne
The Pond / Der Teich
FranceThis piece will not leave you indifferent: In «The Pond / Der Teich», Gisèle Vienne tells the story of a family – based on a play by Robert Walser.
In 1902, the author wrote his only known text in Swiss German: «Der Teich» – or «The Pond». The play is a bitter drama, in which, supposedly, Walser contemplates his life as a young man. Its protagonist, Fritz, tries to attract the attention of his seemingly uninterested family and feigns his death by drowning in a pond. Vienne has staged the ensuing power dynamics with actresses Adèle Haenel and Julie Shanahan with disturbing precision. The light design by Yves Godin and the music by Stephen O’Malley – frontman of the doom metal band Sunn O))) – and François Bonnet congenially form this intense work into a claustrophobic whole.
Vienne, who has tackled social taboo issues in her choreographic works since 1999, has created a theatrical event which impresses with audio visual perfection and aesthetic rigour. (se)
