Pussy Riot

Russland

«Indifference is an evil. And we need to fight it.» With those words the musician and activist Maria Vladimirovna Alyokhina explained the motive behind this year’s European tour of Pussy Riot. Shortly after the beginning of the aggressive Russian war against Ukraine, she left Russia disguised as a dispatch rider. During the first weekend of the festival, she now performs with her band at the Werft.

Pussy Riot has long been one of the best-known bands of present times. Without being part of the music industry, the feminist formation from Russia has manifested in the collective awareness of Europe, due to spectacular performances, political courage and maximum determination. Founded out of protest against the Putin regime, the members of Pussy Riot, often performing masked, have revived the riot grrl movement with absolute rage and delivered punk rock from political insignificance.

With an anarchic delight in experimentation, belligerent humour and serious commitment, Pussy Riot will also urge the Theater Spektakel audience to show more political engagement. And the band puts its money where its mouth is: their tour will also help financially support Ohmatdyt in Kiev, the biggest children’s hospital in Ukraine. (se)

Simple words

The band Pussy Riot comes from Russia. There their members have protested against the president and his government. That is why they had to escape. Now they make music on stage.
